There are milestones you expect as a parent—first smile, first laugh, first time rolling over. And then there are the ones that somehow feel bigger when they arrive. Starting solids has been one of those moments for us.
It feels like just yesterday Freya was a tiny newborn curled against my chest, living on milk, naps, and snuggles. Now suddenly, she’s sitting at the table with us, reaching for food with curious little hands, ready to explore a whole new world through taste, texture, and mess.
And wow… the mess.
More Than Just Food
I’m quickly learning that starting solids isn’t really about how much they eat at first. It’s about discovery.
The way Freya studies a piece of avocado like it’s a mystery.
The way she squishes sweet potato between her fingers before even thinking about tasting it.
The way she looks so proud after bringing something to her mouth all by herself.
Some days it seems like more ends up on the tray, bib, floor, and dog than in her belly—and that’s okay.
Because this stage isn’t about perfect bites or clean plates. It’s about learning.
Trusting the Process
I’ll be honest: introducing food can feel exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time. Every parent wonders if they’re doing it “right.”
Too much? Too little? Too big? Too soft? Did she swallow any? Is she gagging or just figuring it out?
But with each meal, I’m learning to trust both the process and Freya. Babies are incredibly capable when we give them the chance to explore safely and at their own pace.
She doesn’t need a schedule worthy of a spreadsheet. She doesn’t need elaborate recipes. She just needs time, patience, and the freedom to learn.
What We’re Loving So Far
Right now, mealtime looks simple and slow. We’re focusing on whole foods, family meals, and letting Freya join us at the table.

The Sweetest Part
What I didn’t expect was how emotional this milestone would feel.
There’s something so tender about watching your baby take those first steps toward independence while still needing you for everything. She’s growing right in front of me—becoming more curious, more expressive, more herself every day.
And while part of me wants to freeze time and keep her tiny forever, another part of me feels so honored to witness each new season as it comes.
If You’re Starting Solids Too…
Give yourself permission to keep it simple.
You do not need the fanciest tools, the perfect plan, or a spotless kitchen. Your baby doesn’t need perfection. They need connection, consistency, and a seat at the table with the people who love them.
Here’s to messy hands, tiny bites, and growing one meal at a time.
